Preparing for a Career on LNG Carriers
20 Sep 2026BSI Editorial4 min read

LNG carriers are among the most advanced ships at sea, and the sector rewards seafarers who prepare deliberately. Owners look for a clean sea-service record, solid English, and — above all — a safety-first attitude.
Start with the certificates. Basic and Advanced Liquefied Gas Tanker training are the entry tickets; GOC, ECDIS and bridge or engine resource management round out the standard set. Keep every document valid and stored where you can produce it quickly — this alone puts you ahead of many applicants.
Then build relevant experience. Time on gas or chemical tankers transfers well, and cadets who show discipline on any vessel type get noticed. During interviews, expect scenario questions about cargo watches, boil-off management, and permit-to-work systems.
Finally, look after the fundamentals: physical fitness, a professional CV, and honest answers. BSI's crewing team screens for exactly these qualities when we place crews on LNG, LPG and chemical tonnage for our principals.
