Life On Board: A Seafarer's Perspective
16 Sep 2026BSI Editorial5 min read

Ask ten seafarers what life on board is really like and you will get ten different answers — but a few themes come back every time: routine, camaraderie, and the satisfaction of doing a demanding job well.
A sea day is built around watches. Four-on-eight-off shapes when you eat, sleep and exercise, and the discipline of the schedule becomes strangely comforting. Between watches there is maintenance, paperwork, drills — and coffee. Always coffee.
The hard parts are real: time away from family, weather that tests your patience, and the occasional port stay that is measured in hours, not days. Good ships manage this with strong teams. A crew that eats together, celebrates birthdays on board and looks out for new joiners makes a long contract feel shorter.
What makes it rewarding? Responsibility that grows fast, savings that grow faster, and a profession where your competence is visible every single day. For many of our crew, the sea is not a stopgap — it is a career they are proud of.
